scan  sustainable community action network of san diego

this might be of interest to community groups involved in micro business
development that also reduce the use of firewood and other fuels.  these giant
sun oven villagers are in central america and in haiti.  our group is looking
at some possibilities in baja norte.

the  giant solar cooker,  the sunoven villager, will come to san diego october
1st.  scan has invited the folks of global sunoven to show the 1000 lb
commercial solar powered (with a gas backup) bakery unit at the next scan
meeting, october 1st at usiu, green hall. then on october 3rd at the cecut
(tijuana cultural center) it will be featured at the fiesta del sol (call scan
for carpool and ride information).

the village of hope, a school for over two hundred children outside of
portauprince, haiti, is using a “villager" sun oven.  in the central american
country of honduras it is used in several communities as a micro business -
greatly reducing the dependency on cutting scarce wood. see the sunoven on
campus at usiu from noon till the meeting and have an opportunity to talk
sunoven international’s dr. kirk white and paul munsen.

the regular meeting starts at 6:30.  there are two important speakers - andy
hamilton of the san diego air pollution control district and eco village
planner and architect, bruce bebe.

continuing from our last meeting discussing gaviotas, ecological planner bebe
will present a slide show of planned communities that incorporate sustainable
principles such as; using the concept and practices of permaculture,  how to
shift from consumptive to regenerative systems, and integration by
understanding the natural forces.  his slides and experience based discussion
are inspiring and thought provoking.

hamilton will also provoke you with some local facts and innovative solutions.
hamilton says “...change is coming, like  it or not. low density sprawl can't
continue forever... the region will run out of urban residential land well
before 2010.  consequently, land prices will skyrocket.  pressure to grow in
more compact ways will increase. the air pollution control district has
developed a guidance document, ‘tools for reducing vehicle trips through land
use design’  recommending 37 land use and transportation strategies for cities
and neighborhoods to encourage walking, biking, and transit use such as:
bridging gaps in walking/biking routes, especially near transit stops; better
integrating a mix of uses: residential, commercial, office, etc;
improving older, walkable shopping areas through business improvement
districts, reducing speeding through "traffic calming" techniques and better
street design in new neighborhoods.

a donation of $3 is suggested to the sponsoring nonprofit organization the
sustainable community action network (scan); which  provides education and
demonstration of sustainable living ideas and technologies through public
forums and workshops.
