second central american workshop
on solar photovoltaic and cooking
february 24-28, 2003, 8 am 5 pm
justification
costa
rica like other central american
countries has to import 100% of oil and its derivatives for
local consumption, which affects their economy
as well as an environment. according to 1999 data, except costa rica (95%), other central american countries are electrified only between
50-68%, and the possibility of electrification in rural/ remote
communities,
islands and national parks is very low due to high cost of distribution and
transmission of electricity. on the other hand
around 50% of the population cook with firewood, causing deforestation and
health problem. the use of solar energy, an abundant, clean
free and decentralized fuel can help in part this problem.
we have a good experience and have one of the equipped
solar laboratory in the region and also have organized ten local, regional
workshops (1-10 days) on thermal applications of solar energy, and even one
international conference (1994) on solar cooking. in the last event 150 persons
from 30 countries participated. many possible users, students, and installers
visit us to see our solar park, to know about solar energy utilization and for
the science projects. they also ask about any next workshop and /or short
practical course. taking all these into considerations plus fossil fuels and
their adverse effect on environment and health, we have thought of organizing
next workshop in the beginning of next year to share the information.
for whom
industrialists, sellers, installers, importers,
technicians, engineers, university students and possible users etc.
this all finally with the hope that importer can import
better systems, promoter can promote in a proper way, manufacturer can manufacture
quality product and user can save the conventional fuel, thus improving his
budget and keeping the environment much cleaner.
tentative program
the activity with the participation of some
foreign and experienced speakers will concentrate on theoretical, but mainly
on practical aspects of photovoltaic applications (direct conversion of solar
energy into electricity), and components, including sizing, maintenance,
solar cooking, solar pasteurization and other thermal
applications (like water heating, water distillation and dehydration etc.).
in addition to demonstration of various solar devices, one
solar oven will be assembled during the course and one solar lunch
will be served.
- lectures: 25-30 hours lectures on different
aspects of solar photovoltaic and cooking, offered by national &
internationals speakers.
- other activities: making one solar
cooker/oven, real cooking with various solar ovens, half day technical trip,
exhibition of solar house and other solar devices in working mode,
exhibition of technical
literature on solar energy. an official certificate will be issued to the
participants.
official language
spanish.
