executive director's message

each year solar cookers international (sci) receives thousands of contributions from individuals, businesses, charitable foundations, church groups, community organizations and other private-sector entities. some donations are one-time actions, such as a foundation grant supporting a specific program, while others represent the ongoing generosity of loyal sci supporters and solar cooking enthusiasts.

whether in the form of a large grant or modest gift, contributed income is critical to sci. it accounts for over 85% of our annual income, the balance coming from retail sales of solar cookers and related products.

contributions support scis efforts to spread solar cooking and related technologies through activities carried out in one of our four core areas — international program development, education resources, advocacy, and humanitarian assistance. examples of these activities include: establishing sustainable solar cooker programs in kenya; creating and maintaining web-based solar cooking information resources; developing stronger ties to the united nations and world health organization; and providing technical and financial assistance for refugee-based solar cooker projects in chad that serve darfur refugees.

of course, all sci stakeholders — staff, volunteers, beneficiaries — understand the importance of donor support. we strive to acknowledge those who contribute to sci and honor their commitment by maintaining full disclosure and transparency in the administration of our programs and finances. providing financial and related data is one example of how we meet our fiduciary responsibilities.

this financial summary report provides information for the fiscal year beginning july 1, 2006 and ending june 30, 2007, including information on revenue and expenses. also, the summary provides a list of donors who contributed $500 or more to sci during that time period.

it is my pleasure to thank all sci donors and volunteers for helping us with our mission to assist communities in using the suns power for cooking food and pasteurizing water for the benefit of people and their environments.
