solar cookers made to order

we have already written about it often: the ingeniously simple solar box cooker that people in warm countries can use to prepare their meals. with the help of drawings published by solar box cookers northwest in the us, anyone can make a solar oven with a minimum amount of materials. the display model that we made in boxtel is made from wood, blackened metal and glass, but cardboard and plastic film [and aluminum foil] also works well. some time ago, the kringloopwinkel (recycling store), in sliedrecht in the netherlands, launched a special initiative: the volunteers at the store will make solar cookers to order for projects in foreign countries. development partners can place an order and in a few weeks a solar cooker is ready for them--at no cost!

arie de ruiter, the manager of this project says, "we were looking for a good use for recycled materials. something as important as the solar cooker seemed perfect. at first we had planned to send money straight to a small business in ethiopia, which would then build the cookers. however, very little of the food that is eaten in ethiopia can be prepared in a solar cooker [this need to be researched. ed.]. so we decided to build them ourselves. our store is just right for this project: we can make use of our own recycled materials such as waste wood from furniture, and cashew nut cans for the covering.

are things moving? yes, like gangbusters! in october of 1994, the magazine international cooperation (internationale samenwerking) had a short article about our initiative, and we've had over 70 inquiries since that time. within a short time a solar cooker will probably be displayed in the hall of the ministry of development cooperation, and the solar cooker will shortly be a topic of discussion in the dutch parliament (de tweede kamer). we don't really have to do anything; the box sells itself! we've even had to go out and buy some wood, because our recycled wood is all used up.

interested persons can call the recycling store during the day at 01840-21189 or they can call arie de ruiter at home after 6:00 pm at 01840-17764.
