internship program in sustainable living

objective: our objective on this 10 acres of lovely overgrazed ranch land is to live life as harmoniously and sustainably as possible at this time. the home has been focused on this objective since 1983 and is well developed toward these goals. we offer living in voluntary simplicity, off grid, on bulk storage and fresh supplies. we enjoy sharing our knowledge and providing this experience for others on a work-share basis or at cost. we still welcome additional input from others who are on the same path. the local saturday farmers market provides contact with other people with independent lifestyles.

location: rural community at 5800 feet elevation, high desert juniper/sage terrain 168 miles ne of phoenix.

transportation: available from phoenix by white mountain bus lines or by car. directions to the center are provided on acceptance. by prior arrangement, we will pick up and return interns to our local bus stop.

lodging: interns provide their own tent, sleeping bag, personal equipment, etc. primitive lodging space includes open-air sleeping, tenting, and use of a stationary camper. warm, dry retreats are available for stormy weather. a best western motel is 3 miles away. food provided. interns may assist in the preparation of group meals, gardening and other chores. on-site employment available from time to time.

hands-on experience: there is hands-on use or experience of the following

  • alternative technologies in daily living:
  • passive heated home and greenhouse
  • small organic garden with worm composting
  • solar cooking (solar box ovens, solar panel cookers, autoclaving and canning, solar wall oven and other designs from time to time).
  • sustainable emergency kitchen: solar, small flame and retained heat cooking.
  • flint fire starting.
  • solar water distillation
  • food preservation by solar food drying,
  • solar canning and root storage.
  • solar water heating
  • photovoltaic electricity
  • occasional construction work, training through participation on an alternative building design.

cost: $35/week or equivalent.
